Click here to download our DE Guide (PDF) Mission Statement The mission and purpose of the Metro NY PCA Region's Driver Education Program is to provide a safe, structured and controlled teaching environment in which participants can learn advanced car control techniques. The Program is designed so that participants can improve their driving abilities and acquire a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and driving safety. Metro NY Region Driver Education events are not racing, preparation for racing, nor a competition of any kind. No times or placings are recorded and no awards or prizes are received by the participants at Metro NY Region Driver Education events. Any conduct considered by Metro NY Region to be either unsafe or inconsistent with the spirit or purpose of the Metro NY Region Driver Education Program as stated herein will not be permitted. The Metro NY Region Driver Education Program is designed to afford participants the opportunity to experience first-hand the capabilities of high performance automobiles in a controlled environment and to acquire skills that will improve their driving abilities. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2008 ALL INSTRUCTORS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE THEIR CAR TECHNICALLY INSPECTED AT AN APPROVED REPAIR SHOP BEFORE THEIR FIRST EVENT OF THE YEAR AND BRING THE STAMPED FORM TO THEIR FIRST EVENT. FOR SUBSEQUENT EVENTS THIS YEAR, INSTRUCTORS MAY SELF-TECH, BUT ARE STILL REQUIRED TO BRING THEIR COMPLETED TECH FORMS. NATIONAL PCA IS REQUIRING THAT ALL CARS EQUIPPED WITH A 5 OR 6-POINT SAFETY HARNESS MUST HAVE APPROPRIATE RACE SEATS. YOU MAY NOT USE A 5 OR 6 POINT HARNESS WITH STOCK FACTORY SEATS. Harnesses must include a sub strap and be mounted in an approved manner consistent with SCCA requirements and the manufacturer's instructions. A seat designed for use with a harness must be properly installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. This means that a seat is required to have the proper routing for the harness, both through the back and base of the seat for the respective shoulder and anti-sub belts. Shoulder straps should be mounted at 90 degrees to the axis of your spine or at most 40 degrees down from the horizontal. Because the addition of the harness means that the occupants are fastened upright in the vehicle, a roll bar or roll cage is strongly encouraged to complete the SYSTEM. The use of one without the other may result in an unsafe environment and is not a complete SYSTEM. Installation of an incomplete safety SYSTEM, for example properly installed harnesses without a roll bar or roll cage, may result in an instructor electing not to provide instruction in the car. Participation in the event as a student or individuals not signed-off could be limited to the number of instructors electing to instruct in such an equipped vehicle. Additionally, signed-off students who seek instruction may also be impacted based on the availability of instructors willing to instruct in such an equipped vehicle. Our events are open to PORSCHE cars only, with the exception where noted. At this time we are not accepting applications for the Porsche Cayenne SUV. Each driver must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license, current PCA membership, and Snell Foundation 2000 or 2005 approved helmet. The following conditions must also be met: A 2.5lb fire extinguisher with metal bracket mounted to a metal surface. Roll bars are required in Cabriolets, which must also run with the top up unless arm restraints are installed. All 996/997 Cabriolets must run with hard tops in place unless there is a permanent roll bar installed. For Boxsters - the top of the driver's helmet must clear a line drawn from the top of the factory roll bar or extension to the top of the windshield with the driver sitting in a normal upright position and properly belted in. Vehicles must be tech inspected by a Metro New York Region or Zone 1 approved repair shop prior to an event. We are holding one Novice Day Program at the beginning of the season, on Saturday April 12th at Pocono International Raceway. This event is run concurrent with our regular DE Event and is intended for members who would like to try their hand at performance driving in a safe controlled manor. We will waive the fire extinguisher and cabriolet roll-bar requirements for Novice participants for this event only. Members are not required to enter this event to participate in future DE events. For all our loyal Instructors, we are holding our annual Instructor Seminar on Sunday February 24th at The Robert Plan building in Bethpage. Our Chief Instructor Dorothy "Racegirl" Buxbaum has arranged a great presentation with Ross Bentley from Speed Secrets. At the conclusion of this seminar there will be another one for the rest of our DE participants. Please see the Porsche Post / Website for more details. Please check our website (www.metronypca.org) or the Porsche Post for complete details and forms relating to the Metro NY Driver Education Program as well as late breaking news. You should download our 2008 DE Guide from the website and read carefully! We look forward to another great and safe Driver Education season and hope you will be a part of it. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact us; all contact information is listed in the front of the Porsche Post. Andrew Spray Driver Education Chairman Metro NY Region PCA 917 754 1232 (evenings) Harness Standard: revised 1/22/07 Harness Systems: If the participant chooses to install a 5/6 point driving harness (four point systems are not safe and therefore not allowed) several changes to the automobile must be made to create a safe occupant restraint system. Harnesses must include an antisubmarine strap and be mounted in an approved manner consistent with the manufacturer's instructions. The Harness system must be used in conjunction with a seat which has the supplied routing holes for the shoulder and anti-submarine belts. All pieces of the restraint system must be installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. This means that a seat is required to have the proper routing holes for the harness as supplied by the seat manufacturer for the shoulder, lap and anti-submarine straps. The shoulder straps should be mounted at 90 degrees to the axis of your spine or at most 40 degrees down from horizontal. Because the addition of the harness system means that the occupants are fastened upright in the vehicle, a properly padded roll bar or roll cage is strongly encouraged to complete the SYSTEM. The use of one without the other may result in an unsafe environment and is not a COMPLETE SYSTEM. Due to UV degradation and wear the harness webbing must be replaced every five years. |
